About me
Birgit, a native of Germany, came to the U.S. in 1987 to attend the University of Texas at El Paso, earning her bachelor’s degree in 1991 with a minor in Spanish. She began her career as a teacher with Gadsden Independent School District in 2000, serving as a Title I and later a dual language second-grade teacher. She mentored new educators and participated in school leadership committees. In 2004, she earned a Master of Science in Education with a focus on Elementary Reading and Literacy. In 2016, Birgit joined UNM’s Early Childhood Services Center before moving to the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) in 2017. She spent four years with the Literacy and Early Childhood Bureau, followed by two years in the Priority Schools Bureau. Since July 2023, she is serving as Director of the Educator Growth and Development Bureau, overseeing Title II, Part A, the Exchange Visiting Teachers Program, APL micro-credentials, Elevate NM teacher evaluations, and the newly launched Excel NM administrator evaluations.
